Today we are talking about closets. After my last post about cleaning out your closet I'd thought I'd take it one step further. Having a nice organized clean looking closet is a great way to start your day. You start feeling calm, relaxed and it will seem like you have the day under control.
There are two things I feel strongly about when it comes to closets.
1. Paint the inside of your closets white. I have seen it done a couple of times where the inside of a closet is painted a fun colour or the colour of the room, it may work for a select few, but this is not the norm. A white closet interior is fresh, it's bright, you can better see the colours of your actual clothes rather than have them read as a different colour due to the background and light reflecting off the wall colour. You will also not have to paint it again! I've seen a lot of painters in my past just paint the closets the same colour as the room they are in automatically without question. This is a mistake. If you are having your house painted or building a new home, specify this detail. Paint all of the closet interiors white! As a bonus in the future if you decide to repaint your room, you can leave the closet alone. Painting inside a closet is not fun, make the right choice the first time and then leave it alone.
2. Matching hangers make a big difference. Everything is coordinated, fits together properly and it looks organized. My personal favourite are wood hangers. They are strong and last forever. I bought mine over 10 years ago when I moved out of my parents' house. They are still in great shape and have not needed to be replaced. They were not that expensive. Once you have decided to clean out your closet you may not need as many as you thought either. Even if you decide to go with plastic hangers, just get matching ones, the same colour and the same shape per closet. My boys use plastic ones and they are all navy blue. Just keep it consistent in each closet. And those wire hangers……those are really only good for roasting marshmallows or hot dogs over the camp fire.
These two things alone will make a big difference to your closet space.
I've also added a fun little printable to my closet. It's a great reminder when I'm getting dressed that the most important thing is remembering to be loving towards others. In Colossians 3:12-14 the Bible says: "So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It’s your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it."
Reading this helps if I initially have the "don't know what to wear" feeling. I'm reminded that no matter what I'm doing, where I'm going, or who I'm meeting, it isn't actually all about my clothes. Often I don't remember what other people were wearing, but I do remember how they made me feel and how they acted. Once I remember this I feel more relaxed and better prepared for my day.
White interiors and matching hangers may just be my little quirks, but it's helped me feel more relaxed and organized in the morning, so give it try. You may be surprised the difference a couple of little things make.
