In this post I'm going to share with you my absolute FAVOURITE lip balm. I make it myself and I feel like I finally found something that works, and works really well. In the past I always had a tube of name brand lip balm with me…..it's one of those things I don't leave the house without. It has been for years. It's probably the only thing I've consistently had with me, since…I don't know, grade school. I've tried numerous brands and definitely developed a few favourites. Once I started looking more into the chemical ingredients in the products that I was using and when I noticed the continual price increases I thought I should try a DIY. I also found that with certain brands, I had to keep reapplying, it didn't seem to actually be providing moisture to my lips long term. The point of applying lip balm is to help improve your lips, not hurt them so you need more and more lip balm. I'm so excited to have a recipe that works, and it's super easy to make. The first time I used little pot containers, the next time, I ordered some empty lip balm tubes. That made it even better and I highly recommend the tubes. I never really liked to use the pots when I was out and about, because I felt like my hands would have more germs on them. The tube solved that problem, because I'm not using my finger to apply the lip balm.
So first up here's your shopping /supply list:
2 Tablespoons Coconut Oil
2 Tablespoons Beeswax pellets
2 Tablespoons Shea Butter
3 Capsules of vitamin E
Essential oils - I used peppermint (Optional)
Little containers and/or lip balm tubes
You will also need:
A double broiler or a pan with water in the bottom and a glass bowl on top to create a double broiler.
Spatula / something for stirring
Scissors (to cut open the vitamin E capsules.
A medicine dropper (this makes it easier to put the lip balm into the tubes)
Step 1 - Gather and measure out your ingredients.
Step 2 - Get your double broiler set up and ready. Then add the coconut oil, beeswax, and shea butter, stir until they are melted together. Surprisingly the beeswax takes the longest to blend in.
Step 3 - Remove from heat
Step 4 - Cut the vitamin E capsules and squeeze the liquid into the mixture.
Step 5 - Add Essential Oils if you wish. When I last made some I filled a couple tubes before adding the oils for my son who requested plain lip balm. Then I added about 20 drops of peppermint oil. You can always put a little bit in the fridge to cool quickly and test it out. If you want to add more oils or more beeswax for a firmer lip gloss you can just heat it up again and adjust as necessary.
Step 6 - Fill your containers or lip balm tubes. The medicine dropper comes in super handy for this. If you are just using containers you can probably get away without the dropper.
Step 7 - Let cool
Step 8 - Optional - if you wish you can make pretty labels. I played around with designing some labels last time I made lip balm using scrapbook paper. My boys used stickers to decorate and personalize theirs.
Clean up tip - Use a spatula to get as much as you can scraped out of your bowl, no sense wasting a drop! You can use paper towel to wipe out any more before washing the bowl. The less that makes it into the sink the better. Otherwise you can just clean up with soapy water.
That's all there is to it. This recipe made ten tubes and I was able to fill a little glass jar with some extra. I'll keep this one beside my bed for night time use. I would recommend having something extra on hand for the left overs.
And just for fun, here's a behind the scenes shot - I can't do anything without this guy laying at my feet.
